JULY 11 - RVC EVENT - MEETING AT PACK'S CABIN IN AZALEA

******************************************************************************************************************

July President's Letter

It was 4 years ago in early June that Steve Curry of Heritage Motors approached Rogue Valley Corvettes about co sponsoring a Car Show for All Chevy’s. Steve thought it would be a great ending to the summer car season and he penned the name "The Fall Classic." In mid June of 2006, the Board of Trustees met and discussed the challenge of managing a Car Show so early in the club’s existence. Pros and cons were listed and they decided to go for it. By the July meeting a steering Committee was formed and the Fall Classic All Chevy Car Show was born.

The first year we hoped to break even and maybe even make a little. Needless to say we were all thrilled when the event netted $3000 for our charities. The Car Show, the first two years was held at Heritage Motors with Steve Curry being a strong player. After the second year, it became obvious that we needed a bigger venue and Steve helped us put together a proposal for Airport Chevrolet to be the site of the 3rd event. Those first three years we raised $14,600 for charity. Steve is still a strong supporter and participator of the event.

We are now embarking on year 4 for the Car Show. The success of the past and the future is totally due to all of you – members of Rogue Valley Corvettes. You have all been instrumental in making this event a huge success. Every year it has grown and it looks like that will happen again this year.

We have had the opportunity this year to have some of the Skills Students from each of the 3 schools attend our monthly meetings. We have heard from them how much of an impact that our donations have made to their program. You should all feel proud of this accomplishment.

As I write this note to you on the first of July – all the trophies and plagues have been sponsored…thank you. We have 18 people preregistered compared to 4 last year at this time. Many of you have handed out Registration forms at various Car Shows – again – thank you.

As we get closer to September 19 – we will be fine tuning the preparations. We still need to gather raffle prizes for the Car Show and would like to see every member contribute or solicit at least one prize. This year the participants will be selecting a host car for a Trophy so if you want to display your car let Bob or Colin know.

Again thank you for your continued support in this endeavor and Happy 4th of July!

Mary Kush
President

CAR COLLECTION, MEETING AND ICE CREAM SOCIAL

The day, June 6th, started out cloudy but that didn’t deter RVC members from adventuring east. Seventeen cars met at the I-5 rest area at 9:00 in the morning and started out toward Klamath Falls traveling along Dead Indian Memorial Drive to Clover Creek Road then onto Highway 66 to downtown Klamath Falls where they met up with 10 more RVC cars at Heaton’s Private Car Collection.

Harold has over 40 cars in his two buildings. Most of the cars were from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. There was a huge Packard from the 30’s that was awesome. Some of the cars from the 50’s were a 1955 Oldsmobile Convertible, 1955 Nomad, a 1955 Safari, a 1957 Chevy, a 1957 Buick and a 1957 Olds. Everyone seemed to have their own special favorite.

From the Heaton’s, we all then traveled in the sunshine to the beautiful home of Joe and Dianne Sheldon where we had a picnic lunch. We had 51 members in attendance and 15 guests.

We enjoyed hearing from the Skills Students from Klamath Union and seeing some of the new apparel that Mary Jo brought.

Following the meeting, we all enjoyed dessert - pies, cakes and ice cream. This Ice Cream Social has become one of the highlights of our Activities Calendars.

Corvettes lined the driveway around the Sheldon’s beautiful gardens. Thank you Joe and Dianne for hosting this fun filled day.

RVC MEMBERS JOE & PAT GRAN DID THE 2009 INDY 500

Pat and I were invited quests to 2009 running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. Our friends have been attending the race for over 30 years, so we had a very experienced tour guide.

We arrived Thursday and were there for Friday’s Carb Day when the teams do the final test runs to tweak the cars the last time before Sunday’s race. We had pit passes to Gasoline alley and were able to tour the garages and meet some of the teams. Our friend is personal friends with A.J. Foyt’s Chief Engineer, Adam Scheckter. We were invited into ABC Racing’s (A.J. Foyt ) trailer and talk with Adam as he explained the telemetry from the car and how he was analyzing the data to perform all of the final adjustments on the car. Friday night we had dinner with Adam and got to hear a lot of behind the scenes details about the race. Adam is responsible for Vitor Meira’s car.
Saturday we attended the driver orientation meeting at the track and were able to see A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Andy Granatelli and all of the drivers in this year’s race. We also were able to see the Chevy exhibit at the Indy Museum. We saw the new C-7 Corvette concept car along with a ZR-1 and many other notable Corvettes. The new Camaro had quite a display also, the car from the Transformer Movie and at least four Pace Car Camaro’s. The Hall of Fame Museum is a must see if you ever go to Indianapolis.
Sunday was race day and it started early. We were at the track by 9:00AM. There were so many things going on it was just amazing. There were many marching bands including the Purdue University Marching Band. A parade of 33 Corvettes with a Princess for each of the 33 drivers was sight to see coming down the front straight. Miss America, Katie Stam sang “America the Beautiful”, Florence Henderson sang “God Bless America” and Jim Nabors sang his traditional “Back Home in Indiana”. The race started at about 1:05 PM and was absolutely amazing to watch in person. There were at least 7 yellow flag cautions with a couple of serious accidents. Fortunately there were no fatalities. From what we heard the most serious injury was near the end of the race when Vitor Meira hit the wall and fractured two vertebrae in his lower back. Helio Castroneves won the race and Danica Patrick did an amazing job driving very consistent and finishing in third.

All in all we were so glad that we were able to go and check this one off of my Bucket List.

CORVETTES RULED AT KLAMATH "U"

The Car Show is held annually to raise money for SKILLS USA, the Volleyball Team, Football and other programs at the school. This was the first year that Corvettes were a class in the Klamath Union High School Car Show.

Rogue Valley Corvettes were well represented at the event with 12 cars on display.  The Corvettes all showed proudly and were honored with 6 awards.  Those receiving this recognition were: John Bucchino, Jerry Kreiner, Jim Pack, Beverly Baker, Joe Sheldon and new member Bob Reinke.

RVC was also recognized for their contributions and support to the SKILLS Program.  Faculty Advisor, Bob Kerr shared with some of the members how impactful our donation was to their program. Bob and some of his students will be at our June 6th meeting to share information about Klamath Union's program.

MOTHER'S DAY CORVETTE CRUISE TO THE LAKE

25 members and guests took part in the Klamath Falls Corvette Connection Mother's Day run to Tale O'the Whale restaurant at Shasta Lake. The day dawned bright and sunny, and most of participants met at Midland Rest Stop outside Klamath Falls to drive about 1.50 hours to the McDonald's Restaurant in Weed where they met up with RVC members who were attending the event. The group also stopped along the way to take photos and enjoy the view of Mt. Shasta and the warm morning sunshine, and then continued to Bridge Bay Resort at Shasta Lake.

Tale O'the Whale put on a great buffet brunch and had a reserved table for the group. We had a great day, and a good time was enjoyed by all!
