9/26/2009CRAB FEED IN BANDON
One of our last events for the season was held at the coast as once again Steve and Marion Schneider hosted another crab feed. This year they had some helpers and first time crabbers come in early. Joining them at the campgrounds were Craig and Diane Westby and Art and Grace Peary. Also coming early to learn all about the techniques of crabbing were Terri and Werner Kraatz, Paul and Gioia Uhlenkott, Colin and PJ Carnegie and Bob and Mary Kush.
Steve taught all of us how to pick, pull and toss crab. Gioia and Diane were also brave enough to learn how to clean them. We all, at different times joined Steve in his 14 foot fishing boat and went out on the bay or river to set traps, pull them and then toss too small ones back only to then do it all over again. As we pulled the first crab pot and dumped 20 – 30 crab into the boat, our excitement waned when we could only keep two of them. Oh! The trials and tribulations of crabbing.
Thursday evening we celebrated Terri’s birthday dining on Marion’s home made clam chowder - we also did nibble on a bit of crab!!. For dessert we had a delicious chocolate cake and sat around the campfire only to hear Gioia ask about where were the s’mores.
Steve had many of us out on Friday and Saturday morning trying to catch enough crab to feed the club members gathering on Saturday. Winds came up late in the morning and limited our ability to go out on the water.
Saturday morning found all of us at the picnic area getting things set up for the feast – tables were set and moved into the sun, salads were made, butter was melted and the warm bread cut…oh and thank you Gioia for the great dessert. When the Corvette Caravan arrived we were ready to dig into the feast.
Be sure to take a look at the pictures in the Gallery to see how we all enjoyed the meal. We sincerely appreciate all the energy and work that Steve and Marion put into making this one of the favorite events. I now know how much time and work goes into catching over 120 crabs to feed our group. We enjoyed the sunshine, the food and the chance to visit with all the RVC members that attended.
