6/17/2010Cruise Events Medford June 17th 20th, 2010Medford’s biggest event of the year brought approximately 530 cars to the Rogue Valley for a series of fabulous events. The Medford Cruise Association celebrated its 25th anniversary with non-stop action and Rogue Valley Corvettes was proud to participate again this year. The Medford Cruise Association, Greater Medford Rotary, and Rogue Valley Corvettes, along with many sponsors and volunteers put together a charity event benefiting the youth in our area.
Rogue Valley Corvettes and Rogue Valley Street Rods assisted in the “Kick Off Party” at Lava Lanes on Thursday, June 17th. Beautiful cars and a Karaoke contest made for a great evening along with hamburgers and hotdogs coming off the Iron Horse barbeque. RVC provided controlled parking for that event and Stevie and the Cruisers (Steve Curry) took home the perpetual trophy for the Greater Medford Rotary. They may have won the event, determined by applause, due to the L.A. Lakers scoring effort that evening.
Friday’s events included an autocross put on by 11 Shelby Cobras that were unbelievably quick on Medford’s Go-Cart track. I hope Bob Cambas and a certain RVC Trustee can retain their office as they were seen on the track in the Cobras. Stop light drag racing concluded that evening accompanied by “ringing in the ears.”
Saturday’s events began for yours truly at 6:00 AM as Rotary members prepared breakfast and parked cars in Hawthorne Park. RVC again flew our colors over the club information booth and assisted in vehicle judging. We were saddened to hear of the passing of George Bailey from Rogue Valley Street Rods. He had become a special friend to a number of us in RVC.
Rogue Valley Corvettes met at Heritage Motors at 4:15 pm for a briefing from the Medford Police Department for our duties in providing cruise route security. Eighteen RVC Corvettes blocked the access streets and two more participating in the cruise. This year’s cruise security went extremely well and Bob Kush provided bottled water and “sand box” transportation when needed. The cruise ended at 8:30 pm, but it was now time to head for Kids Unlimited for a terrific stage show featuring Elvis Presley, Ritchie Valens, and Buddy Holly. Dave Stickland & Helen, Dan Richards & Cyndi, Dave & Linda Guches, Jim & Sherry Dalziel, along with Jim & Marilyn Pack, were rocking! Gioia, don’t miss this event next year! Bed time came at 1:00 am. for some individuals, not sure for some rockers.
Sunday brought another 6:00 am start, for the Unlimited Show & Shine and my lesson in folding event T-shirts. I was allowed to go home at 4:30 pm after we climbed the ball park backstop to remove sponsor banners. Oh, did I tell you Dave Guches and I drove 11 hours from Joseph on Thursday to make the “Kick Off Party.”
Last but not least I want to give a big Thank You to all those RVC members that worked the Security detail for the Medford Cruise. We heard a lot of positive comments from the public on the job you all did. Many people wanted to be sure that you knew that they appreciated you giving your time for this event. And especially from me, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
